Craig Coopersmith, MD

Craig Coopersmith, MD, Dr. Craig Coopersmith is the Director of the Emory
Critical Care Center. He is also Professor of Surgery at Emory University School
of Medicine. Dr. Coopersmith is currently the Principal Investigator or co-
Principal Investigator on multiple research grants from the National Institutes of
Health related to his work on the gut in sepsis and the immune response to
sepsis. He is also the Principal Investigator on a NIH-funded T32 training grant
on critical care. Dr. Coopersmith co-chairs the Surviving Sepsis Campaign
and is an author on multiple international publications including the Sepsis-3
definition, the 2026 Surviving Sepsis guidelines (as senior author) and SOFA-2.
Dr. Coopersmith served on the national guidelines panel for COVID-19
management sponsored by the NIH for its entirety and has advised the
World Health Organization on COVID-19. Dr. Coopersmith is past-president of
the Society of Critical Care Medicine as well as a past chair of Discovery, the
Critical Care Research Network. He is also the 2023 recipient of the American
College of Critical Care Medicine Distinguished Investigator Award and the
2024 recipient of the Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Lecture and Award, the
highest award given from Emory School of Medicine to one faculty member each
year. His role as WFICC Ambassador includes involvement in Research and
Education.
