Our heritage

Where it all began

Dr. Alan Gilston from the UK provided the impetus for the formation of our global group after the 1st World Congress of Intensive Care Medicine in London in 1973. Pictured here are all the delegates at this inaugural Congress;

The idea of forming a World Federation of Societies took shape. The concept was discussed and refined at the World Congress in Paris in 1977. The founding constitution was formally approved and adopted by the General Assembly delegates meeting at the World Congress in Washington DC in 1981 and the organisation was officially formed. In 2019 General Assembly delegates approved a change of name from World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (WFSICCM) to World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care (WFICC).
