Gene Sung is Associate Professor and Director of the Neurocritical Care and Stroke Division at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, USA. Professor Sung was appointed President-Elect in October 2019, the first incumbent of this new Office and will assume the Presidency at the 15th World Congress in Vancouver in September 2021.
Following the award of his MD at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1991, Professor Sung completed his post-graduate training in the Neurosciences Critical Care Division of Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1996.
Professor Sung was a founder of the Neurocritical Care Society and served as President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary between 2005 and 2013. He was the Associate Editor of Neurocritical Care from 2004-2012 and he has authored or co-authored over 100 publications and presented over 300 invited lectures to national and international audiences.
Professor Sung has played an important role intensive and critical care medicine by focusing on the development and promotion of neurocritical care throughout the world. There are currently few practitioners trained specifically in the field and a small number of dedicated Neurocritical Care Units. Professor Sung is currently leading a Task Force to develop a world-wide consensus statement on Brain Death Determination.
